Late Rain is named an AudioFile Earphones Award Winner

Late Rain, narrated by Kenneth Campbell was a recipient of an AudioFile Earphone Award as presented by AudioFile Magazine. The book also received this review–

In many respects, this splendid mystery sounds more European than American. The action is cerebral (though still compelling), and the characters are well drawn, interesting, and unpredictable. Also, the humor is subtle and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. Adding to the high quality is narrator Kenneth Campbell, who perfects the memorable characters: the good and bad cops who realistically outdo each other (listeners feel like eavesdroppers), the “loser” murderer and his creepy milieu, the charming, streetwise informant, and the elderly father suffering from Alzheimer’s. Not only does the story keep listeners guessing until the end but there are moments of deep emotion and the characters are so good one hopes to meet them again.

You really need to treat yourself to this book. It’s one of the most impressive things I’ve ever read – yes, ever – and I can’t for the life of me figure out why Lynn Kostoff isn’t a household name. The way he weaves several fascinating subplots in the book together is nothing short of sublime, and his incredibly skilled, nuanced character development lifts Late Rain beyond being “just” crime fiction and into the realm of genuine Southern Gothic literature.

To call LATE RAIN crime fiction is certainly accurate—it has its fair share of crime like all the best books do—but it’s not just genre fiction.

Late Rain is a rich, painful and moving novel that’s willing to get down-and-fucking-dirty when it counts.  This is a book of great ambition and intense intimacy at once, an experience that will make you feel and hurt yet you’ll rocket through the fucker all the same.  To say you can’t lose is to be too cynical.  No, instead I’ll say this: With Late Rain every-fucking-body wins.

Nathan Cain reviewed A Choice of Nightmares. There’s an excerpt below. The full review can be read here.

“In the end, it’s the ambiguity that Kostoff maintains throughout the story that makes it such a compelling read. He refuses to give in to the temptation to provide simple answers, making the story all that much more satisfying, at least for readers who eschews easy answers and pat endings.”

A noir thriller that delivers with vivid writing, smart plotting, and a deeper-than-usual insight into its flawed central character.
